Transformers Receive Flood Protection near River

Sleeves raise height of transformers to reduce risk due to high water levels

Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro (“NOTL Hydro”) is pleased to announce that on Friday, December 13, 2019 it completed the installation of four concrete sleeves under the four transformers most at risk from flooding by the Niagara River.

Each of the sleeves is around 12 inches high.  It is felt this additional height should be sufficient to protect the transformers from all but the worst flood conditions.

While outages were necessary as a safety precaution, these were kept to a minimum as fortunately only minimum work was required to extend the electrical wiring with the additional height.

The four transformers raised were all in the area of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Marina on the Niagara River.  Other low-lying transformer locations will be evaluated to see if they should be raised in the same manner.
